Calendar Girls is based on a true story and returns to the Midlands by popular demand.
Calendar Girls visits Birmingham

Calendar Girls visits Birmingham

Calendar Girls is the extraordinary true story of a group of WI women who set out to raise money for a friend’s husband who was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in February 1998.

The close-knit community of their small village of Cracoe in Yorkshire rallied round to support John and Angela, determined to do something positive to help.

Before John was diagnosed, the WI were talking about their annual calendar and thought that it would be funny to produce one in the style of Pirelli.

This idea was brought back to the drawing board when they found out about John’s illness, hoping that it would raise some money for the Leukemia Research Fund, they also thought that it would entertain John in the process.

John made a point of telling his wife Angela that they would not have the nerve to go ahead with it, “It will never happen – you are all talk,” he would say.

Just five months after the diagnosis, John passed away.

The calendar idea was soon underway with 11 WI women baring their all in the noble cause.

The story goes from there with the hilarious task of photographing these ladies, with each posing for a month of the year.

It was hoped that they raised enough funds with the 3000 print runs of the calendar, but who would have guessed that they would become famous.

The story takes them from their small Yorkshire community to appearing on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno in Los Angeles the interest from the international media anxious to report the feel-good story was phenomenal.
