La Bete meaning “Beast and a Fool” in french, was first shown on Broadway in 1991, and unfortunately was a flop, running for just 25 nights, although did do slightly better on the West End.
Brave though, for the director Matthew Warchus to turn his attention to this 17th-century spoof, but this time with some appealing comedy actors. Joanna Lumley, David Hyde-Pearce (the fantastic actor Niles from Frasier) and Mark Rylance all join forces to show this comedy can work, with a winning performance from Rylance.
Watch and enjoy as a common street performer is hired by a princess to join her royal troupe, then later clashes with the trained troupe leader in a hilarious stand off and momentous showdown! Bravo!
